Students to participate in Wassail Weekend

The talents and community orientation of students from Woodstock Union Middle/High School will be on display during Wassail Weekend Dec. 14-15.

The combined high school and middle school band members will kick as a festive group with over 75 members strong. The students work annually memorizing a medley of secular holiday songs to perform as a warm up for the crowd, ahead of the equine exhibitions featured in the popular Woodstock event. The band is always closely monitoring the temperature of the day with hopes it won’t dip too far below freezing for their instruments to function.

The high school Interact Club will be hosting Frosty’s Fun Zone on the Woodstock Green prior to and during the parade. This club will be offering holiday themed crafts and activities including face painting and fun photo opportunities.

Woodstock Union Yoh Theatre Players will present “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens on Dec. 13 at 7 p.m., Dec. 14  at 7 p.m. and Dec. 15 at 3 p.m. in the high school auditorium. This is Charles Dickens’ famous tale of Ebenezer Scrooge’s transformation from embittered skinflint to generous benefactor, dramatized by John Mortimer with typical flair and wit. Retaining Dickens’ own ironic point of view through the use of the Chorus, whose asides and observations enrich and propel the drama, Mortimer has created a panoramic view of Victorian London with all the much-loved characters–miserly Scrooge, the loving Cratchits, faithful Nephew Fred–in place. The show will be a true district-wide community event including participation from 40 middle and high school Yoh members, 12 Yoh juniors who are students in grades kindergarten through sixth, and 27 local teens and adults singing in the chorus.

The Windsor Central Supervisory Union’s strategic plan has a critical focus area related to community alliances. The students’ participation in this annual event is one way that the school system supports and enriches the local community.
