Friday, Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m. — RANDOLPH — Chandler Center for the Arts in Randolph brings an innovative performance to the Chandler stage on Friday, Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m., joining two of Canada’s leading musical forces: the highly acclaimed Gryphon Trio and opera/cabaret soprano Patricia O’Callaghan.
Celebrating its 21st anniversary in 2014, Gryphon Trio has impressed international audiences and the press with its highly refined, dynamic performances and has firmly established itself as one of the world’s preeminent piano trios. With a repertoire that ranges from the traditional to the contemporary and from European classicism to modern-day multimedia, the Gryphons are committed to redefining chamber music for the 21st century. They will demonstrate just that in their performance in Randolph in what Chandler board president Janet Watton enthusiastically describes as a “side by side” cross-over presentation, a new twist in the Chandler classical series.
The Trio’s release of Beethoven’s Op. 70 piano trios won the much coveted Juno Award, and in September was selected by CBC Music as “one of the 30 best Canadian classical recordings ever.” Appropriately, the Trio will begin the program with the Beethoven Piano Trio in B-flat major, Opus 97, often referred to as the Archduke Trio. Named for Archduke Rudolf of Austria, his benefactor, student and friend, it is the last of his piano trios and one of his best known chamber works.
In the second half of the program, with the works from a collaborative recording, the Trio and Ms. Callaghan will take listeners on a haunting and beautiful musical journey through the complexities of the creative spirit, blending classical music with popular songs from around the world.
