Saturday, Nov. 15 at 10 a.m. — BRANDON — Vermont author and poet, Jerry Johnson leads a workshop, “Self-Publishing: What’s It All About? Is it Right For You?” on Saturday, Nov. 15 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Compass Music and Arts Center in Brandon.
During the workshop, Johnson will share his stories and insights from his more than 10 years of experience in the publishing industry.
Topics will include: writer’s groups and organizations such as the League of Vermont Writers, Poetry Society of Vermont and Burlington Writers Workshop; making connections; self-publishing on various formats; social media; indie presses; editing and proofreading; marketing; print-on-demand; eBooks and iBooks; self-publishing companies; Vermont indie presses; creating your own imprint; finding the “right” people, organizations and companies to help you achieve your goals.
The publishing industry has changed dramatically over the past 10 years. Hundreds of thousands of authors are publishing profitable work right now instead of waiting for agents and publishers to give the green light.
With the encouragement of Galway Kinnell, former Poet Laureate of Vermont, Jerry Johnson self-published his first book, “A Bed of Leaves,” in 2004. Did you know that Mark Twain self-published “Huckleberry Finn,” Irma Rombauer self-published “The Joy of Cooking,” and countless others like Walt Whitman, Edgar Allan Poe, Steven Crane, Upton Sinclair and Deepak Chopra published their own works?
Johnson states, “Self-publishing is a good thing and you don’t have to do it on your own. My goal is to give people sufficient information on what’s available to help them self-publish and the encouragement to do so! I hope to cut down on their learning curve.”
