Benson buzz

BENSON—ATV trails are closed now with the start of hunting season. Don’t be surprised to find enthusiastic four-wheelers on town roads.

When you close down hunt camp, please pack up your unopened, non-perishable foods to drop off at G&L on Route 22A, the Benson Village Store, or the Benson town office for donation to Fair Haven Concerned. Thanks.

After learning that the burn facility where Benson’s trash was being hauled would no longer accept construction debris, Benson has decided to buy a 30 yard Dumpster for those materials. The Dumpster is for people doing small jobs, like a single room, but not an entire house. They will accept only material being brought in by car or pick-up truck, and no commercial refuse is allowed. Large quantities of construction debris may be taken to the Gleason Road transfer station in Rutland.

Poultney honors fire department

POULTNEY—Poultney’s Chamber of Commerce recently named the town fire department as its 2014 Citizen of the Year. The department is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year.

The award honors all the department’s present and past volunteers with a public reception scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 1, at the firehouse, 263 Beaman St., from 4 to 6 p.m. The town of Poultney is co-hosting the reception, which includes light hors d’oeuvres and celebration cake.

How will the department will handle the honor given to each Citizen of the Year award, that of being Grand Marshal of the upcoming 2015 parade on July 4? Certainly all the honorees will not fit in a convertible.

Poultney to celebrate late

POULTNEY—Halloween is a bit behind the calendar in Poultney this year. Both a 5K and a children’s fun run originate from Katie’s Center, 38 N. College St., on Saturday, Nov. 1. All are invited to participate including little people in strollers, walkers, and pets that don’t bite. The center also offers supervised Halloween activities for children.
