Three bears killed on interstate

On Monday, Oct. 6 at approximately 6:30 a.m., Ann M. Grandbois, age 51 from Washington, Vt., struck three bears that were walking on Interstate 91. Grandbois was driving south on Interstate 91 at mile marker 16.5 near Exit 4 on the Dummerston/Putney town line; the bears were walking north in the southbound travel lanes.

After the accident, Grandbois contacted the State Police to report the incident. Vermont Fish and Game were notified of the incident, too. There were no injuries. Grandbois was wearing her seatbelt and was able to drive her 2007 Toyota Camry from the scene with only moderate damage to the front bumper on the passenger side. She is not expected to face any charges for the incident, police said.

Police said the bears, a mother and two cubs, died as a result of the collision.
