CSJ weekly athletics roundup

It was another busy week in athletics at the College of St. Joseph. The baseball and softball teams played a combined 11 games, going 7-4 cumulatively. Fighting Saints Baseball went a perfect 3-0 on the week, improving their overall record to 19-20. They were recently ranked fourth in the USCAA Week Three Coaches Poll.

They gave up a total of three runs in their three games combined and look to be playing their best ball of the year as the regular season quickly comes to a close. Lady Saints Softball went 4-4 on the week, bringing their overall record to 5-13 on the season. They are currently riding a four-game winning streak after beating Central Maine Community College in four straight games over the weekend. The Lady Saints are also playing at their best going down the final stretch of the season. Here is a look at the games played over the past week.

The Lady Saints got the week started with back-to-back home losses against the Fisher Falcons on Monday. Both games were close, but CSJ came up short 10-8 and 23-17, respectively. They had leads at certain points in each game, but were unable to contain the powerful offensive attack of the Falcons. Game two was a slugfest in which the two teams put together a combined 40 hits.

The Lady Saints played their next two games at Fisher. There was less scoring, but the results were the same, with CSJ falling 12-3 and 7-3 on each end of their doubleheader match-up. CSJ fought hard but could not put together the hits they needed in order to compete.

April 22

Baseball put together a stellar performance against Dean College on Saturday. They dominated the game from start to finish and ended up winning 15-2. Nick Burch stuck out 11 batters and allowed only three hits.

The Lady Saints had a perfect day on Saturday, beating the Central Maine Mustangs 14-0 and 13-0, respectively. Shelby Fenton pitched complete game shutouts for both games and was masterful in doing so. CSJ came out firing on all cylinders and the Mustangs never had a chance in either game.

April 23

The baseball team took care of business on Sunday, defeating the Fisher Falcons on both ends of their doubleheader match-up. The Saints had stellar performance pitching and defensively, winning 5-1 and 4-0, respectively. They are now one win away from being .500 on the season.

The Lady Saints closed out the week with two more victories against Central Maine CC on Sunday. They won the first game 9-0 and allowed the only run of the weekend in game two, but still earned a 17-1 victory. They have eight games left to play this season, while the baseball team has nine left. Both teams will look to finish off the regular season strong and get ready for the post-season.
