Rutland Rugby drowns against Mad River

By Maxx Steinmetz

On Saturday, Sept. 13, Rutland traveled to Stowe to play Division 3 relegates, Mad River/Stowe in the second week of the regular season.

Despite a strong opening 20 minutes, Rutland could not convert their efforts into points  until the second half when eight man, Chris Olsen, “picked-and-go”-ed off of a scrum-down and dove over the white wash for an unconverted try.

Throughout the game, Mad River would exploit overloads on the outside scoring tries, despite Rutland’s strength at the set pieces (scrum-downs and lineouts).

The scores stood at 45-5 at the end of the game with the home team victorious.

However, despite the recent loss, Rutland only fell one place in the standings. They will host last year’s division champions, Berkshire, Saturday, Sept. 20.
