RRPC encourages towns to build flood resilience

RUTLAND—The Rutland Regional Planning Commission (RRPC) will begin collecting flood-related data from area municipalities over the next few months, in an ongoing effort to prepare for potential flooding and protect water quality in the region. The work will focus on Act 16 (H. 401), a law enacted in 2013 that adds flood resilience to the goals of municipal and regional land use planning. Flood resilience is the ability of the region to effectively plan for, manage, and recover in a timely manner from flooding.

RRPC will work with all 27 municipalities in the region to complete a flood resilience plan checklist, which is intended to help a municipality get started in a self-assessment of its flood resilience. This data also will assist town planning, local hazard mitigation planning and basic emergency operations.

The Rutland Regional Planning Commission is a quasi-governmental, non-profit organization which encourages the coordinated development of the Rutland region, advocates for the needs of its member towns, and strives to build a thriving regional economy while enhancing the area’s quality of life.
