POULTNEY — Green Mountain College is pleased to announce that biologist and author Bernd Heinrich will be the visiting scholar for the College’s M.S. in Environmental Studies (MSES) program, Sept. 10-13.
Heinrich’s rich body of research has dealt primarily with understanding how behavioral and physiological adaptations of animals allow them to negotiate their physical environment. His research interests span a wide territory, including temperature regulation in insects, energetics and foraging in bees, and social and foraging behavior of ravens. He has published 18 books, many of which interpret complex science for the popular audience.
Educated at the University of Maine-Orono and the University of California-Berkeley, Heinrich has been a faculty member at UC Berkeley and the University of Vermont, where he is currently Professor Emeritus.
Heinrich will meet with MSES students throughout the program’s three-day residency on campus. Students in the two-year MSFS program complete most of their coursework online, but the residency is an opportunity to interact with fellow cohort members, their faculty, and the visiting scholar. Heinrich will also be available for informal talks to undergraduates and to the general public.
