Killington softball league: First loss in 10-year streak broken

And then there was one: a loss for Clearly Moguls pitcher Jeremy “Jackie Blue” Livesey. It was his first loss in 10 years of pitching in this league. They say if you’re going to do something, do it big. Well, his first loss was a big one as his team suffered a 29-6 loss to Garlic McGrath’s last Wednesday, June 8.
Garlic McGrath’s delivers a loss
It started out good as C.M. was able to get the first two batters out, but it quickly went down hill. Livesey gave up the first of three home runs to Josh Tarleton; his first was a three run shot. Livesey walked the next two batters and then Nate Mispel drove in Jeremy Prior for the 4-0 lead. G.M. loaded the bases but Livesey delivered a “Cold Beer K” to Taylor to end the inning. It was a promising first inning for C.M. as they cut it to one (4-3) after RBI singles from Angel Shannon and new guy Cliff Aker. They had a chance for more but Scott “Scooter” Watelet hit into an inning-ending double play. C.M. resurrected the careers of a few good men and welcomed back Johnny “Lightning” Hurley, Neal Giberti and Watelet who all had since retired from the team. They also brought up two guys from their farm team, including Aker.
The second inning saw G.M. bat through their order, scoring nine runs to run away with the game. Included in that is another three-run homer by Tarleton. C.M. had no answer and Hurley saw his first at-bat end in a “CBK.”
The third inning was the only bright spot defensively for C.M. as they shut G.M. down 1-2-3. The first out was a long fly ball by Ezra Lemieux to rookie outfielder “DJ” Dave Hoffenberg who had to go full extension with a diving catch, a miracle catch at that (if I do say so myself!)
G.M. added two runs in the fourth with yet another home run from Tarleton. He had Livesey’s number all night long. If the deficit wasn’t large enough as it was, G.M. made it unreachable with a fourteen run fifth inning, with twelve of those coming with two outs. Watelet and Giberti blasted long home runs in the fifth but that was all she wrote. Tarleton ended up four for four with nine RBI.
Clearly Moguls rallies
C.M. put that ugly loss behind them and welcomed back a friendly face in Outback pitcher Steve “Wheels” O’Neil. It’s what the doctor ordered as they beat the Outback 13-1. Livesey started a new streak and returned to form, pitching a four-hitter with one “CBK” and four walks. Wheels was able to deliver one “CBK” and that was to the very first batter, Hunter Pike. It was a short game as C.M. only got up four times but the end result was a pleasant one. They flashed some speed in the third when Brett Regimbald and Shannon hit back-to-back, inside-the-park home runs. C.M. welcomed back Brando Remick for his first game of the “DL” and he had two RBI.
Max Team takes two
The Outback Wolf Pack started their week with two ugly losses to the Max Team. They were only able to score one run combined in both games. Max Team took game one 12-0 and game two 11-1 and were able to deliver two “CBK’s” in each game.
Killington Deli wins in rain
The Max Team wasn’t able to stay perfect on the week. The Killington Deli finally got in the win column in a rain-soaked 14-4 mercy win over them. The game started dry and competitive and turned to wet and a blowout. It was 2-2 after one. Max Team took the lead 3-2 after two and it was 4-4 after three. The K.D. took the lead for good in the fourth with five runs and added five over the next two inning to seal it. The top of the order was the most productive for the Deli with Jimbo Cassineri going four for four with three runs scored and Pete Melluzzo going three for four with four RBI. Each pitcher delivered three “CBK’s” and each team suffered a strike-out looking with Emily Dundas for Max Team and Nick Melotti for the Deli.
The Deli had an up and down week as did their first opponent, Killington Resort. The Deli started their week with a blowout 23-7 loss to K.R who opened the game scoring eight runs. The Deli answered with four but could not keep up with the onslaught of hits and runs. The Resort hit through their order in their first three at-bats. The Deli ended the game going down 1-2-3 with all three outs to the shortstop. Nate Stoodley added to his home run total for the Resort and Melotti added to his strike out looking total with yet another.
Killington Resort and Garlic McGrath’s keep it close
K.R. had a see-saw battle doubleheader with G.M. Each team won one and each win was close. The Resort lost the low scoring affair 9-6 and won the hit parade 20-18. G.M. pitcher Bob Pauly was en fuego in the first game delivering three “CBK’s” with one to Chandler “KOS” Burgess and two to Matt Peters. Both teams woke up the bats in the second game. It was hit after hit and run after run. Stoodley added two homers to his ever growing total and Evan Anderson hit his first two of the season.
