Obituary: Horace Edward Glaze, age 85

On May 13, 2016, Horace Edward Glaze, known as “Red,” passed away quietly in Lakewood Ranch, Fla., where he had recently retired and was residing with his wife Taylor. Red was born on Oct. 20,1930, son of John Glaze and Marjorie Glaze. He moved to Killington, Vt., in 1959 as a young man and began a life of hard work, service to others, and dedication to the growth of Killington’s resort and its community.

Red Glaze along with his wife, Lillian, who predeceased him in 2001, built and ran the Red Rob Inn, one of the first ski lodges in the area and a popular après ski spot in Killington’s early years. The building now houses the Killington Mountain School. Over time, Red Glaze built several local structures, many homes, and the Glazebrook complex, he helped with town roads, and even ski trails.

Red Glaze, a Paul Harris Rotarian, dedicated himself to a life of community service. As town moderator for 29 years, as Killington’s first fire chief, as a town selectman for several terms, and until recently, as head of Sherburne Fire District No. 1, Red Glaze wore many hats, but his favorites were his golf cap and his ski hat. Red Glaze has been a friend to all and was honored at his retirement party on April 24, 2016 at Green Mountain National Golf Course by over 300 guests who came to wish him well in his retirement.

Glaze is survived by his wife Taylor (Kuhling) Glaze; three stepsons, Domenic F. Chiarella and his wife Stephanie (Brecko) Chiarella, of Killington, Vt.; Michael J. Chiarella, of Philadelphia, Penn.; Matthew S. Chiarella and his wife Sarah (Yingling) Chiarella and their children Hudson and Simone, of Pasadena, Calif.; two loving nephews Jonathan Glaze and his wife Sandra of Westfield, Mass.; and Rusty Harding and his wife Barbra and their family of Middlebury, Vt.; also his loving stepdaughter, daughter of Lillian Glaze; and Barbara Guy and her husband Peter and their family of New Castle, Colo. A private service was held in Lakewood Ranch, Fla. Red Glaze will be buried next to his wife Lillian in the Sherburne , Vt. cemetery at a private service later this year.

A community celebration of life for Red Glaze will be held at Summit Lodge, Wednesday, June 1 at 6 p.m. All are welcome.
