Submitted A plaque on the wall honors past recipients of the Kellen Sams Memorial Leadership Award given to those who dedicate their work to outdoor education and recreation.

Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports is accepting nominations for the Kellen Sams Memorial Leadership Award, recognizing volunteers, staff, and interns who demonstrate outstanding organizational commitment and leadership. Kellen Sams dedicated his life to outdoor experiential education and inclusive recreation. Established in his memory, the award highlights individuals who embody his passion for professional development, leadership, and outdoor education for all abilities. Nominations are accepted throughout the year, with the 2025 recipient announced this fall at Vermont Adaptive’s annual appreciation lunches.

Kellen Sams was an avid adventurer, outdoor educator, and advocate for adaptive sports. His experiences included working with Outward Bound, wildlife conservation efforts along the Appalachian Trail, and instructing at the adaptive ski program in Crested Butte, Colorado. Despite his extensive training and safety measures, he tragically lost his life in an avalanche in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains in 2010. This award continues his legacy by recognizing those who share his dedication to inclusive outdoor recreation.
