The holiday spirit sparkled at Rutland’s Paramount Theatre with three show dates of “Elf The Musical Jr., ” a remake adapted from the 2003 comedy film which had been directed by Jon Favreau, written by David Berenbaum and starring Will Ferrell as Buddy the elf.

“Elf The Musical Jr.,” presented by Rutland Youth Theatre, brought Buddy played by James Shorey  the bumbling elf and his colorful cohorts to life in an on-stage musical production filled with engaging performances and riveting song that set the tone for the holiday season.

The play begins at the North Pole, where we find Buddy alongside Santa (Myles Donohue) and his elves going about their usual Christmas-time operations. Buddy, shocked, overhears word that he might actually be a human, not an elf. Learning that his real family lives in New York City, Buddy takes voyage en route from Santa’s Village to the streets of NYC to meet his ”real dad, Walter Hobbs (Jackson Marks) who doesn’t know Buddy exists.  Hobbs, an overworked crumudgeon who’s character reflects the world’s loss of belief in the Christmas spirit.

Shorey, brilliantly portrays Buddy in his attempt at connection with his dad and newfound family. He propels the narrative forward through its theme—to save the Christmas through belief in Santa and the Christmas spirit—which also provides the magical the power to make Santa’s sleigh fly. It is only through Buddy’s infectious optimism that reignites the relationship with his reluctant dad. Shorey’s infectious enthusiasm blended whimsical acting and a lively, top-of-lung charisma along with a surging singing performance.

When Buddies crosses paths with Jovie the mildly cynical yet hopeful dept. store employee (played by Apple Williams) a romantic love connection emerges guiding Buddy on a head-over-heels path toward acceptance of his newly-found home in New York City.

Williams’ expressive acting and dynamic singing captured audience commanding the spotlight, highlighting her stage presence. The evening culminated with a duet with Williams’ and Shorey’s soaring harmonies, creating a crescendo that amplified their magnetic connection. Spectators were thrilled, filling the theatre with resounding applause.

Supporting roles were solidified by Finn Allen who played Buddy’s mom,  Buddy’s brother Michael, played by Emet Geary-Young and Walter hobbs tyrannical boss, played by Myles Donohue who also played Santa.

The wardrobe for the evening was a display of vibrancy and true to form with Buddies recognizable pointy green elf hat and suit.  The army of little elves, clad with festively colorful outfits, and tunics adding to their magical look. The illustrated backgrounds were displayed in detail on a jumbo tv screen at the back of the stage, changing intermittently in accordance with the theme of each set.

Together, Buddy and cast. including the large cast of elves, police officers, bystanders and office staff  radiated a cohesive synchronicity and charm. The chemistry was strong and registered warm reception with the audience. Their seamless and joyful interactions created an engaging atmosphere, making it clear they were enjoying themselves on stage. Overall the performances were spirited a with a finely choreographed rhythm indicating a solid, well rehearsed cast. The enthusiasm was infectious, exuding a spirited themes leaving the imprint of a touch of nostalgic optimism and holiday cheer.
