Saturday, Nov. 19 — RUTLAND — An Olympic curling gold medalist is coming to Rutland. The Rutland Rocks Curling Club will host 2018 Olympic Gold Medalist Tyler George on Nov. 18 and 19. George will present to area school children on Friday, followed by a viewing and talk-through of his teamÕs gold medal Olympic game for Vermont curlers at the Italian American Club at 73 Grove St. in Rutland. On Saturday, George will meet with also meet the Castleton University Curling Club.
Area curlers are invited to Giorgetti Arena (Oak Street Extension at Pine Hill Park) on Saturday, November 19 to get on the ice with George from 7 to 9 p.m. Space is limited; Rutland Rocks is taking RSVPs on a first come first serve basis at rutlandrockscurlingclub@gmail.com. Cost is $15 to cover ice fees. Those who have not attended a Learn to Curl and wish to join the club may also contact Rutland Rocks Curling Club at rutlandrockscurlingclub@gmail.com to request a spot.
Tyler George is a native of Duluth, Minnesota. He is a three-time U.S. Champion, 2016 World bronze medalist, and 2018 Olympic gold medalist with a team nicknamed “The Rejects” a reference to the fact the four members had been dropped from the United States Curling Association’s high performance program. The Rejects ultimately earned a spot in the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang, So. Korea. The team came from behind, beating Canada’s Kevin Koe, a two-time world champion, to reach the gold-medal match versus Sweden.
After a close game, the U.S. won 10-7, earning the U.S. its first ever Olympic gold medal in curling. George is visiting Rutland Rocks Curling Club as a sports ambassador for the U.S. Curling Association.
Rutland Rocks Curling Club is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation founded in 2007. Adult members curl twice a week at Giorgetti Arena.
