The Roger Clark Memorial Library in Pittsfield is getting a makeover.
On June 2, the Pittsfield Select Board approved an expenditure of $5,325 to repaint the interior of the library and to refasten and refinish its floorboards. The board agreed to hire Don Marshall and Corey Novotny, respectively, for the jobs.
Select Board member Joyce Stevens met with Novotny recently to survey the library. “He said, ‘I came up here one day with wet feet, and the water’s seeping into the floors because there’s no protective coating on top,’” she recounted.
The library will have to be cleared in advance of the work, with materials temporarily stored on the floor below. Stevens pointed out that several of the bookcases are on wheels. “You can just wheel them into the elevator,” she said.
She also observed, however, that about six of them “are heavy-duty metal.” The board expressed hope that volunteers would lend a hand.
The Roger Clark Memorial Library shares a building with the Pittsfield Town Office at 40 Village Green. Other upgrades, such as repainting its cupola and replacing the trim on its windows, have already been planned but have not yet taken place.
