Rutland County Habitat for Humanity held a groundbreaking on April 23 at the home site for a new Habitat for Humanity house on Hickory Street in Rutland city.
The property on Hickory Street is one of three lots donated by the Rutland Housing Authority. Josh and Rose Tabor will live in the house and will contribute hundreds of hours of sweat equity to the project.
The home has been designed by local architect John Berryhill to fit both the lot footprint and the style and character of the neighborhood and its existing homes and also to have a layout compatible with Josh’s blindness.
The Housing Authority, headed by Kevin Loso, had been in contact with Rutland County Habitat for the last several years while working with the city and HUD to make the lots available.
The ceremony started at 1 p.m. with local dignitaries and business people attending, including Mayor David Allaire and Matt Whitcomb of the Board of Aldermen.
Anyone interested in helping is encouraged to contact Habitat for Humanity. Once completed, Habitat homes are sold to qualifying families at no profit and no interest. The deed will restrict any future sales to keep the house in the affordable housing range.
