Pawlet Library launches seed lending library

Saturday, April 9, at 11 a.m. —PAWLET—The Pawlet Public Library will launch its seed library with a kick-off event on April 9, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., that will include activities for children and adults. From the seed collection of vegetables, herbs, and flowers, library patrons may “borrow” the seeds with a library card. The library’s goal is to create a culture of learning, sharing, and community by offering free access to seeds for growing food, flowers, herbs and native plants.

“We aim to develop locally resilient plants and sustainable seed saving while providing seeds as a public resource,” said Library Director Lyndsi Barnes. “I wanted to find a way to bring the community together that extends the boundaries of books.”

How does it work? A seed lending library is a system for participants to “borrow” and “return” seeds at no cost. Simply visit the Pawlet Public Library to select the seeds you would like to take home, plant, and enjoy. If you know how to save seeds, the library asks that you save some of the seeds from the hardiest plants that grew, then “return” them to the seed library for others to “borrow” next season!

Barnes collaborated with volunteers from the University of Vermont Extension, College of Agriculture & Life Sciences, Community Horticulture Programs, Master Gardener & Master Composter to create a short workshop series at the library.

“I can’t wait to learn about  ‘crazy/ jumping/Asian’ earthworms,” she said.

The Pawlet Public Library is located at 141 School St. in Pawlet.
