Jack Walther Zuckerman, 83

Jack Walther Zuckerman, 83, of Saratoga Springs, New York, and Killington, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Nov. 12, 2021.

Jack was born on May 12, 1938 to the late Josef and Henrietta Schattner Zuckerman in Vienna, Austria at a time when the world was making it very difficult to exist as a Jew. As a child, his family was taken from him and he was only able to survive thanks to the kindness and daring efforts of Father Bruno. He was able to be ferried to safety to the United States.

Jack Walther Zuckerman

Throughout his life, Jack sought to rebuild what was taken from him and to create opportunities for others. Using the United States Army Air Force as an opportunity to leave the Hebrew Orphanage in Newark, New Jersey, he traveled the world. In his travels he found in himself, despite the hardship of his upbringing, a huge charismatic force that earned him quick friends and companions for life. From this came his first marriage to Nuala Lawlor and the foundation of family. Jack and Nuala brought into the world three children and lived with all of the trappings and complexities that were there to experience as a family in the ‘70s.

Always the entrepreneur, Jack took full advantage of whatever business venture he put his mind to, and he enjoyed great success that allowed him to pursue a life of work and play with his second marriage to Monna Bender, now enjoying the life of grandchildren and frequent skiing.

Skiing was a hobby that became a lifestyle when he took on the role of ski instructor that he kept into his early ’80s. Jack enjoyed being outdoors whether on the water or in the mountains. He was a member of the 100 day club at the Killington for many years.

In addition to his parents, Jack was predeceased by his eldest son, Joey Zuckerman.

Jack is survived by his children, Lea Osborne, David Zuckerman, Ursula Hall; eight grandchildren, Danny, Dara, Hannah, Noah, Sarah, Sophia, Griffin and Declan; four great grandchildren, Christopher, Jethro, Ada and Ira.

To Jack’s Killington friends: raise a glass of Riesling to honor our friend. Burial with military honors will be held at a later date at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to be made to The Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York, 184 Washington Ave. Ext., Albany, NY 12203.
