It comes once a year — well, maybe October 2020 was an exception — and celebrations are beginning to ramp up with Woodstock residents and visitors getting their costumes and Halloween décor ready, making sure there will be plenty of cider donuts and candy.
At the Norman Williams Public Library, from Oct. 25-27, a pumpkin carving contest. Pumpkin submissions have been collected and are on display in the library foyer. Don’t miss your chance to vote on your favorite pumpkin. The winner will be announced Oct. 30.
Saturday, Oct. 30
The South Woodstock Country Store is hosting hayrides and a large, haunted forest throughout the village from 4 – 6 p.m.. Trick-or-treating for the little ones with maps will be provided at the fire station to plan a candy route. This Halloween event is geared toward children 10 and under but all young at heart are welcome. Parking provided at the South Woodstock Fire Station.
Visit the Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS) to celebrate Halloween with the “Halloweeny” themed events, including Scales and Serpents and Owls in Myth and Legend. The day’s schedule includes Animal Artifacts (10 a.m.-4 p.m.); Predators of the Sky (11-11:45 a.m. and 3-3:45 p.m.); Owls: Myths and Misconceptions (1-1:30 p.m.); Scales and Serpents (2-2:20 p.m.); and Peeps & Squeaks (4:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m.).
Sunday, Oct. 31
The Barnard General Store will be providing a Trunk-or-treat family fun event just outside of the store by the lake from 1-4 p.m. Join them for a costume contest on their porch, and they will have a bounce house in the backyard for the children’s delight.
The grand event in Woodstock will take place on High, Maple, and Golf Streets from 5-8 p.m. The tradition continues with these three streets closed to traffic for Trick-or-Treat mania. All three streets will be participating in passing out sweet treats while decorated to spook and delight all who dare to come. All goblins, princesses, superheroes, and fun Halloween costumes will be on full display. Don’t be afraid to get into it and be sure to enjoy this Woodstock tradition.
