Since 1838 the Sherburne United Church of Christ, better known as The Little White Church, has served as a place of worship in Killington. It is located on Route 4, a little set back from the road. In fact, if you are traveling too fast, going either East or West, you will miss seeing it.
You may be surprised to know the church was moved in 1957 to create room for widening Route 4.
Through the years Sunday services, including Sunday School for children, many weddings, baptisms and family events including reunions have been held there. In recent years, busloads of tourists, here to enjoy the fall colors have enjoyed a sit down, home cooked turkey dinner and a chance to talk to locals about what it’s really like to live in Vermont.
It is a small but mighty little church supporting such things as Dismas House, Women’s Network, Open Door Mission and the Humane Society. Many of you have probably attended the free town wide Pancake Breakfast held to thank and honor the town crew that faithfully keeps our roads clear all winter.
So, it is not surprising and only fitting, in this crisis of Covid that we are enduring, the Little White Church is again rising to the occasion. It is maintaining a food pantry, stocked with non-perishable goods provided by donations. It’s there to serve our community whether you come once or several weeks in a row…whatever your needs may be. They have even thought of our pets and have both cat food and dog food. Everyone is welcome and you make take a little to tide you over or a lot to feed your family for a week.
