Castleton Indivisible to hold demonstration for USPS

Saturday, Sept 5 at 11 a.m.—RUTLAND—Castleton Indivisible is inviting the public and postal workers to join them in a peaceful show of support for the United States Postal Service (USPS) this Labor Day in front of USPS on 173 West St. in Rutland. They are calling on Congress to fully fund the USPS and on the Postmaster General to restore the sorting machines, to fully staff post offices so that mail is no longer delayed, and to comply with Congress’ demand for documents related to Postal Service mail delays and contacts with other government and campaign officials. While Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has agreed to halt changes that would cause even more delays, he needs  to reverse the damage he’s already done. Thanks to him, people are going without medicine, senior citizens are waiting on Social Security checks, and businesses are losing customers who are frustrated by delays. It is also safe to assume that these delays mean that mail-in ballots in some local elections have been returned too late to be counted. A fully-functioning USPS not only ensures voting rights, it is the only form of postal delivery guaranteed by the Constitution. And efforts to slow the mail are especially harmful right now, as so many are relying on delivery as a matter of survival in the midst of a global pandemic.  Castleton Indivisible is a group of grassroots activists working throughout Rutland County, who believe in a vision for the United States that embraces equality and justice for all, free and fair elections, diversity as strength, racial justice, healthcare as a right, science-based decision-making, and environmental responsibility.

Please join in holding signs to support the USPS in commemoration of Labor Day!

Masks and social distancing required. If you are going to bring a pet, please limit this to service pets only. By choosing to attend this event, you are committing to participate non-violently and to work to de-escalate confrontations with others.
