Slate Valley Trails hosts community trail work day

Sunday, June 7 at 2 p.m.—POULTNEY—Slate Valley Trails (SVT) is excited to offer its first community trail work day of the season on a brand new loop trail at the Poultney Elementary School (PES) and Veterans Park. This past week, local trail builder Hardy Avery of Sustainable Trailworks donated his time to get the project started. SVT needs more volunteers to bring the project towards completion. The trail will include features that make it great for beginner mountain bikers. This is one aspect of a larger project that includes building a bicycle obstacle course, other trail improvements on school property, and building a fleet of 25 bicycles to be used during PES physical education classes.

This project is a true community venture with collaboration among Slate Valley Trails, the Vermont State Employees Credit Union (VSECU),  local businesses, the Town of Poultney, and the Poultney Elementary School.

The volunteer trail work day will be on Sunday, June 7 from 2 to 5 p.m. at PES, meeting adjacent to the playground. No trail building experience necessary. Stay for as long as you can.  Bring your own work gloves, water, face mask/covering. Please consider bringing your own tools if you have them, but they will have tools on hand. Work to be done includes: clearing small brush, cutting small roots, raking gravel and dirt, and installing fence posts/and rails.

They will be abiding by the most recent State of Vermont and CDC guidelines for trail work and social distancing, including but not limited to: limiting group sizes to 10 or fewer, wearing masks, social distancing, and disinfecting tools.

To limit group sizes, they ask that you please RSVP by calling or emailing Tim Johnson at salmonpwiggle@gmail.com or 518-282 9089. If you want to know more about this project or have questions, feel free to reach out to Tim as well.
