Billings Farm & Museum celebrates draft animal week online

May 11 – 15—WOODSTOCK— Join Billings Farm at Home for an online draft animal celebration, May 11 – 15. Learn all about the historic role these powerful animals played on the farm and how they are used today.

Meet their draft horses, Luke and Lonnie, and take a virtual horse-drawn wagon ride around the farm! Check in with Huck, the American Milking Devon steer featured in “Huck’s Way Home,” who is now all grown up. Learn all about draft animals: Why do steers have horns? How are draft animals trained? What is an ox? Visit Billings Farm at Home to find out the answers to this and more.

Activities for the week include recipes and video demonstrations to make shoofly pie, a classic treat after a day of plowing fields, and the original farmer “power” drink, switchel. Kids can follow instructions to make a hobby horse. Explore the different uses for horsehair as a fiber on the Draft Animal Celebration edition of Thursday Threads.
