Rutland County GOP nominates candidates for appointments

On Saturday morning, Feb 22, Republican delegates from all around Rutland County filled the Fox Room of Rutland Free Library to nominate candidates for appointment to fill two vacated county offices.

Assistant Judge David Lewis, having served since 2011, recently resigned effective March 1, 2020.

Also, Sheriff Stephen Benard submitted his letter of resignation to the governor effective March 15 after serving 30 years with the Rutland County Sheriff’s Department and as the county’s sheriff for the last 16 years.

A slate of candidates was approved for each office to be presented to the governor for his consideration.

David Fox, William Humphries and Scott Tucker were nominated for the sheriff position, while Stephen Benard and Donald Chioffi were nominated for the assistant judge position. Both of these offices are elected every four years and will be on the ballot next in 2022.

With the many legislators, office holders, faithful public servants, and candidates among the delegates in the room there was an energized sense of unity.

Terry Williams, Poultney’s GOP committee chair and candidate for a state senate seat, commented, “It’s encouraging to be here today, we’re building a great team, proud to be a part of it!”
