‘Valentine’s Day Phantom’ peppers Killington with love

KILLINGTON—Residents and visitors to Killington were greeted with a Valentine’s Day surprise — hundreds of paper hearts affixed to windows, doors and signs all over town on Friday morning. This cheerful display was made possible by a team of volunteers assembled by the Sherburne Memorial Library.

The idea was inspired by a group of people in Montpelier that have spent the early morning hours of February 14 posting red hearts all over downtown Montpelier businesses for the last 20 years. The “Montpelier Valentine’s Day Phantom” actually began the February after 9/11 in an effort to lift the spirits of folks in the capital city.  Now each year, residents look forward to driving downtown on Valentine’s Day morning to see the red hearts against a blanket of white snow.

Several months ago, a member of this group came in to the library in Killington and suggested doing the same here this year. The group hopes the “phantom” will go statewide and a number of towns will participate.

A group of people in Killington agreed to make sure that all the businesses on Route 4 and along both sides of the mountain road got special red hearts on windows and doors this year. Photos of all the hearts can be seen on the library’s facebook page, facebook.com/sherburnememorial.
