Catch an encore presentation of the apocalyptic ‘Wozzeck’

Saturday, Jan. 18th at 12:55 p.m.—RUTLAND— The Paramount Theatre is hosting an encore performance of the Metropolitan Opera performance, “Wozzeck.” Berg’s 20th-century shocker stars baritone Peter Mattei in the title role, with Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin on the podium and soprano Elza van den Heever as the long-suffering Marie. Groundbreaking visual artist and director William Kentridge unveils a bold new staging set in an apocalyptic wasteland.

After wowing audiences with his astounding production of “Lulu” in 2015, South African artist William Kentridge now focuses his extraordinary visual imagination on Berg’s other operatic masterpiece, “Wozzeck.”  Met Live tickets are $23  for adults and $10 for students and children.

This live cinema transmission is part of the Met’s award-winning Live in HD series, bringing opera to more than 2,200 theaters in more than 70 countries worldwide.

The world premiere of this landmark opera was held at Staatsoper, Berlin, in 1925. One of the emblematic achievements of the thriving artistic forces in Germany and Austria during the brief period between world wars, “Wozzeck” was a sensation and a scandal at its premiere. Remarkably, it has lost none of its power to fascinate, shock, and engage audiences, and its status as one of the defining musical works of the 20th Century has not blunted its vitality.

The Paramount Theatre is located at 30 Center St. in Rutland. For more information visit paramountvt.org.
