Killington hosts final weekend of skiing and riding

Staff report

Killington Resort held its final day of the season on Sunday, June 2—marking 211 operating days this season—the longest in the East.

“From snowfall total and our operating days and people being here, it’s been a great season,” said Killington Resort Communication Manager Courtney DiFore.

Killington has only made it until June twice before in the last 20 years—in 2017 and 2002.

“I think more people were coming out the enjoy all the snow sports this season,” DiFore said.

This season was also longer than last year.  Snowmaking on the Superstar trail started on Oct. 16 in preparation of the Audi FIS Ski World Cup and the resort opened Oct. 19.

It snowed 233 inches this year, which is only an inch more than last year, but the timing of the snow made this year a better season. Last year, skiing and riding started Nov. 8 and ended May 26.

“It always depends when it falls,” DiFore said.

Snow depths totaled more than 30 feet on most of the trail once snowmaking efforts ended. The snow held up through spring rain and high temperatures.

People celebrated the last weekend of skiing and riding with tailgate parties while the resort gave out free last day T-shirts with Ben and Jerry’s ice cream.

Summer operations at Killington began Memorial Day weekend.  Mountain biking, which is now open weekends, will open seven days a week next week. The adventure center is open weekends only until June 21 while golf is now open seven days a week.

“I’m thankful to the entire Killington team for providing such an outstanding season to our dedicated season pass holders and guests,” said Mike Solimano, president and general manager of Killington, in a press release.
