Police investigate ‘suspicious’ death in Proctor

Police are investigating the suspicious death of a woman that was reported early Saturday, May 18  on Market Street in Proctor.
State police were notified of the death at 4:52 a.m., and troopers from the Field Force Division and members of the Major Crime Unit and Bureau of Criminal Investigations responded to the location. Investigators and the Crime Scene Search Team are processing the scene and gathering evidence at this time. Market Street was closed for a portion on Saturday while the investigation is underway.
Initial investigation indicates this is an isolated incident, and there is no danger to the public.
The victim in this incident is preliminarily identified as Melanie Rooney, 31, of 13 Market Street in Proctor.
An autopsy was planned for Sunday, May 19 at the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington to confirm the victim’s identity and determine the cause and manner of death.
The investigation remains ongoing and active. Police are asking anyone who may have information about the incident, including any security camera footage or other video from the area, to contact the Rutland Barracks at 802-773-9101.
