Wednesday, May 2, 7 p.m.–RUTLAND—Middlebury College Professor Emeritus Eric Davis will consider the U.S. Constitution’s importance and vulnerability in today’s world in a talk at Rutland Free Library on May 2 at 7 p.m. His talk, “A Republic, If You Can Keep It,” is part of the Vermont Humanities Council’s First Wednesdays lecture series and is free and open to the public.
After the Constitutional Convention Benjamin Franklin was asked what kind of government we had. His famous reply – “A Republic, if you can keep it”– speaks to the fragility of our constitutional form of government. In this talk, Professor Davis will explore how the brilliant foundational concepts established in 1787 remain just as essential – and fragile – today.
