Police search Poultney quarry

By Evan Johnson

POULTNEY— Vermont state police searched a water-filled quarry in Poultney for a Granville, N.Y., man who has been missing since 2014.

According to a press release from the state police, divers from the state police SCUBA team began a search of an abandoned slate quarry on York Street Extension for evidence in the disappearance of Jonathan Schaff. Schaff, age 23, has been missing since Jan. 18, 2014, when he left a Granville bar after getting into a fight and crossed the state line into Vermont on Route 149. Schaff’s cell phone was later recovered in a parking lot.

Det. Sergeant Todd Wilkins, who is leading the investigation, would not disclose what divers did or did not find at the quarry, but said that new leads in the investigation led them to deploying the team of divers. On Thursday, July 27, Wilkins said the investigation remained active.

“We’re still assessing what our next move will be,” he said.
