Police probe death reported as accidental self-inflicted shooting

By Adam Federman, VTDigger

Vermont State Police are investigating the death of a Mount Tabor man whose wife told police he accidentally shot himself.
According to police, 54-year-old David Shores Sr. ,was found dead from an apparent gunshot wound Sunday evening at his home on Brooklyn Road. Police said Shores’ wife called 911 and said he “had fallen and accidentally shot himself.”
Half a dozen investigators spent much of Sunday night and Monday morning reconstructing the scene, according to Capt. JP Sinclair, chief criminal investigator with the Vermont State Police.
According to Sinclair, the man’s body had been removed and sent to Burlington for an autopsy. A Vermont State Police crime team spent Monday scouring the scene, Sinclair said.
“Whenever we have to have very careful documentation and collection of evidence, these are the experts who do it,” he said.
Investigators use 3-D laser scanners to map the scene, and any additional evidence will be sent to a lab before further details are disclosed.
“Anything to do with the reconstruction, I’m not ready to release,” Sinclair said. He also declined to comment on whether the reported fall was responsible for the firing of the gun.
A neighbor reached by phone who lives about a tenth of a mile from Shores’ home declined to comment.
Shores and his wife, Peggy, lived on their own, Sinclair said. VTDigger’s call to their home went unanswered.
According to their answering machine message, the couple ran a masonry business. Shores Masonry Inc. is listed online at 602 Brooklyn Road, the couple’s home address.
