Opening reception to be held for “Figuration” exhibit

Saturday, Dec. 17 at 3 p.m.—ROCHESTER—Whether you love the open, cold spaces of this time of year, when light floods the hills and valleys, or you prefer the coziness of a cabin’s wood-stove, you will want to plan a visit to BigTown Gallery where two new, light-filled shows featuring three artists will help you face the dark days of winter.
On display in BigTown’s main gallery, “Figuration” features paintings of Mark Goodwin of Randolph, and Lucy Mink-Covello of Contoocook, N.H. Goodwin’s renderings in earthy colors, often employing collage, folding, and other manipulation, make one think of windows or ground where bottles might be arranged or stones or other objects. Mysterious and elegant, Goodwin’s work invites contemplation and joy.
In her abstract and colorful work, Mink creates an exuberant mélange of shape and pattern that irresistibly draws you into her labyrinths. Mink has selected provocative and playful titles for her paintings, such as “Closer Than You Know,” little poems that stimulate the viewer’s own thoughts and feelings. Sometimes, one may see faces in her work; in fact, one might see lots of things in Mink’s work, with a little imagination.
In the center gallery, “Landscape and Figure” showcases Fulvio Testa’s evocative watercolors reminiscent of Italy (Testa was born in Verona, Italy, and divides his time between there and New York). Serene landscapes in greens, blues, and rose shimmer with light, and lovely small nudes use line and color sparingly to show the body’s beautiful shape as it rests.
The opening reception for these two exhibitions will be held Saturday, Dec. 17, 3-5 p.m. The shows will be on view until Valentine’s Day, 2017.
BigTown Gallery is located at 99 North Main St., Rochester. For more info, visit bigtowngallery.com.
