Massachusetts man arrested in Hartland bank robbery

HARTLAND — Vermont State Police have arrested a Massachusetts man in connection with a bank robbery in Hartland over the weekend.
The robbery occurred at 10:15 a.m. when a man entered the Hartland branch of the Mascoma Savings Bank on Route 12 at the junction with U.S. Route 5 and demanded money from a teller.
The suspect was described as a white male, 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 8 inches tall, 150-160 pounds, brown mustache with facial hair and wearing a dark blue or black cap with ear flaps, two-tone zip-up, hooded jacket black over grey in color with the interior of the hood being orange, tan pants, and black shoes.
The suspect did not display a weapon and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspect left the bank and headed southwest on foot.
On Monday, Dec. 12, Vermont State Police arrested Stephen Silva, 45, of Springfield, Mass. Police received information over the weekend that Silva may have been involved in the bank robbery. Police searched Silva’s motel room and the vehicle he had been driving and recovered evidence of the bank robbery, including clothing worn at the time.
The vehicle Silva had been operating was determined to have been stolen out of Massachusetts. The Connecticut registration plate on the vehicle was also determined to have been stolen.
Hartford Police Department personnel assisted in the investigation.
Silva was lodged at Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield, Vt. ($50,000 cash or surety bond.) He was be arraigned on Tuesday and is facing charges of Robbery, Aggravated Operation without Owner’s Consent, and Possession of Stolen Property.
