CSJ weekly athletics roundup

College of St. Joseph Athletics had a relatively slow week, with only men’s soccer and women’s volleyball participating in games. It was another positive week for the men’s soccer team as they went 2-0 and have put themselves in a great position going down the stretch of the season. They are now 9-5 overall on the season and have won their last three games. Fighting Saints soccer has also dominated in the Yankee Small College Conference, going 7-2 and looking to be the favorites in the conference. The women’s volleyball team had another challenging week, although they came just two points away from winning their first match of the season against Dean College. They ended up going 0-3, which drops their overall record to 0-15. They are still going through some growing pains in their second year as a program, but they have shown signs of good things to come. Here is a look at the games played over the past week.
Oct. 3
The women’s volleyball team put forth a great performance, but came up just short of beating the Dean Bulldogs on Monday. The match was tightly contested throughout the night and the Lady Saints would eventually lose in the fifth set. Maggie Miller and Jenna Crowley each had stellar matches and were the main reason for CSJ’s success. It was the best all-around effort that the Lady Saints had shown all season and they look to build on that moving on.
Oct. 5
The men’s soccer team came back from a 2-0 deficit against Vermont Technical College on Wednesday, eventually winning the match in the last minute of the first overtime period. The game-winning goal was scored by Amani Francois off a beautiful corner kick from Rosyvelt Baessa.
The women’s volleyball team lost in straight sets to the SUNY Delhi Broncos. They were close to winning the second set but the Broncos proved to be too much of a force for the Lady Saints to reckon with.
Oct. 8
Fighting Saints men’s soccer won a tightly contested matchup against University of Maine at Presque Isle on Saturday, with a final score of 4-3. The match went back and forth with two ties throughout. In the 72nd minute of play, Helder Andrade was able to blast a shot past Presque Isle’s goalkeeper off a great pass from Keven Andrade creating the game-winning goal.
Oct. 9
The women’s volleyball team lost to YSCC powerhouse NHTI in straight sets on Sunday. The Lady Saints looked fatigued. They gave what they could but it was not enough to surpass NHTI.
