CSJ weekly athletics roundup

RUTLAND—It was a busy week in athletics for College of St. Joseph, playing 11 games. The men’s soccer team won two of their three games, improving their overall record to 7-5. Goalkeeper Kyle Milligan was awarded USCAA Player of the Week honors for his outstanding performances in the week prior. The Baseball team played two games over the weekend against NHTI and won each of them handily. Women’s Soccer went 0-3, dropping their overall record to 0-10. They did have a bright spot this week when they scored their first goal of the season against Hampshire College on Sunday. The women’s volleyball team also went 0-3 record on the week, bringing their overall record to 0-12.
Sept. 28
The men’s soccer team kicked things off with a 3-0 victory against Paul Smith’s on Wednesday. CSJ had 10 shots on goal, doubling Paul Smith’s shot total. The Saints played masterfully on defense, not allowing Paul Smith’s to gain any momentum.
Women’s soccer lost to Paul Smith’s 7-0, which matched the score of their first meeting earlier in the year. Paul Smith’s proved to be too deep for the Lady Saints to handle, with six different players scoring.
The women’s volleyball team lost in straight sets to NCAA Division III team Lyndon State. The Lady Saints had their moments but Lyndon State was too much for them to handle.
Sept. 30
Men’s and women’s soccer each had difficult showings on Friday. The men lost to USCAA powerhouse University of Maine at Fort Kent 4-0 and the women’s team lost to SUNY Adirondack 13-0.
Oct. 1
Fighting Saints Baseball kept their successful fall season going by sweeping NHTI by scores of 8-1 and 10-1. Jared Morello and Chris Doyle tallied three hits a piece in game one, while Nelson Barreiro went the distance to pick up the win. Jose Ramos pitched a complete game in game two, where he was supported by a pair of Tyler Kunzmann doubles.
Women’s volleyball played in two matches on Saturday. They ended up losing in straight sets to both NHTI and Unity College.
Oct. 2
The men’s soccer team closed out their week with a 4-0 victory against Hampshire College. They played very efficiently, moving the ball from side-to-side and taking advantage of their opportunities. Their four goals were scored by four different players, highlighting well-rounded play.
The women’s soccer team may have been defeated by Hampshire, but Brittany Hance was able to score the Lady Saints’ first goal of the season. Now that they have that achievement out of the way, they look to score more goals down the stretch of the season.
