Education course offers info on real estate resources

Thursday, Sept. 29—RUTLAND—The Rutland Natural Resources Conservation District (RNRCD) will host a continuing education course approved by the Real Estate Commission, on Thursday, Oct. 6, 8:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. at the College of St. Joseph (St. Joseph Hall, room 105) on Clement Road, in Rutland. Registration is at 8 a.m. Pre-registration is required by Sept. 29 and space is limited.
This course is designed for real estate brokers and salespeople in need of obtaining credits towards the fulfillment of the educational requirements for renewal of their real estate license. The focus will be on demystifying FEMA and floodplain maps. Learn about the ins and outs of flood hazard and river corridor maps with Ned Swanberg from the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) rivers program. Swanberg will demonstrate how to access and interpret map data, understand NFIP insurance requirements, municipal and state regulations, flood mitigation opportunities for buildings and strategies to help communities reduce losses from flooding and channel erosion.
Participants will also obtain contacts for site-specific concerns.
Also, learn about Vermont’s Shoreland Protection Act guidelines with Vermont lakes expert Michaela Stickney. Topics include landowner requirements, common sources of confusion, implications for shoreland real estate development and redevelopment along lake shores, and the “grandfather” clause. Understand the connection between healthy shorelines, water quality, and habitat. Gain resources to advise property owners on transactions and development in land adjacent to lakes.
