Rutland Rec fall sports begin, registration closing soon

RUTLAND—Rutland Recreation Department is offering a variety of sports and activities for area students of all ages. Register at rutlandrec.com or stop by the office located at 16 North Street Extension in Rutland for info.
Archery
Basic level beginner archery class for ages 7 and up will be offered Wednesdays, Aug. 31–Sept. 21 from 4–5 p.m. Students gain knowledge and understanding of equipment, safety, form, shooting and marksmanship. They will learn how to safely and correctly handle the equipment while employing their skills on different targets at a range of distances. Targets, bows and arrows are provided. Fee to participate is $48 city residents and $59 for non-residents.
Rock Climbing
Registrations for rock climbing are now being taken. Session 1 begin Sept. 12.  The program offers a wide range of levels from beginner to advanced and times vary depending on level. Staff from the Green Mountain Rock Climbing will assist climbers in learning all aspects.
Soccer
Soccer programs for pre-k through sixth grade are available for registrations programs will begin on Saturday, Sept. 10. Instructional soccer for pre-k–second graders will focus on the basics followed by small sided play and will feature fun skill-oriented games. This program is only successful with the assistance of the parents. Cost to participate for pre-k through kindergarten is $33 for city residents and $44 for non-residents. Cost for first and second graders is $39 for city residents and $50 for non-residents.
Third to sixth graders will be in a full house league with games played mostly on Saturday afternoons and occasionally on a Monday or Wednesday evening and will play area towns. Cost to participate is $44 for city residents and $55 for non-residents.
Flag Football
This program is a non-contact league for boys and girls in grades 3-6. Practices are 1-2 times per week and games are played at Meadow Street Park on Sunday afternoons and Tuesday evenings under the lights. Program is run by volunteer coaches (opportunities available). The last day to register is Aug. 31 – after that registrations will be taken on a space-available basis only. Fee to participate is $50 for city residents and $61 for non-residents. A $25 uniform deposit is required and will be returned to you once you turn in your jersey at the end of the season.
Field Hockey
Field Hockey program for grades K–6 is being offered Thursday evenings from 5-6:15 p.m. at the Rutland High School starting Sept. 8 – Oct. 13. Program is open to beginners to the experienced player; with each session participants will learn dribbling, passing, receiving, shooting and more. Each session will finish game play to put those skills into action. Two games for grades 3-6 will be scheduled with other towns. Participants need a stick, shin guards and a mouth guard. Each player will receive a reversible pinney. Cost is $32 for city residents and $43 for non-residents. A $10 late fee will apply after Aug. 31.
