Pick-up and camper go airborne off interstate

SPRINGFIELD — On Monday, June 20, at 3:19 p.m. Vermont State Police and Springfield Fire responded to a single vehicle crash on I-91 at mile marker 39N in Springfield.

Jerry Schleis, age 68 from Tombstone, AZ, was traveling north in his 2008 Chevrolet pick-up truck with a bed camper when the vehicle drifted into the median. It became airborne after driving up the u-turn embankment, according to police, and the vehicle was in the air for approximately 130 feet before landing north of the u-turn.

The camper separated from the truck and the truck continued north in the median where it struck trees and came to a stop.

Schleis suffered a head laceration and was transported to the Springfield Hospital. He told police that he possibly fell asleep. Schleis was issued a ticket for driving off the roadway, according to a report from police.

Schleis was wearing his seatbelt.
