Castleton University announces first doctoral program

Doctor of education in leadership set to debut in the fall of 2016

CASTLETON – Castleton University announced June 20 the addition of its first doctoral program, the doctor of education in leadership. This new program is set to debut in the fall of 2016.

The doctor of education in leadership at Castleton University prepares system-level leaders and administrators in PK-12 education and higher education for senior positions within their respective fields. The program seeks to nurture dynamic educational leaders who will hone data-driven practices and policies, which will further develop their own local professional organizations and educational contexts at the school, district, state, and institutional levels.

Including tracks in both PK-12 leadership and higher education leadership, the program is comprised of short-term residencies and online/hybrid coursework, including a portfolio/dissertation aimed at supporting continuous improvement and refinement of best practices in the field. Courses are taught by a mix of full-time faculty members and complemented by practitioners who are leaders in their districts and institutions of higher education.

The PK-12 leadership track builds upon Castleton’s already established master’s degree in leadership, the Castleton Institute for School Leaders, which trains educators for careers as principals and for other school-level administrative positions. The track in higher education trains aspiring, early-career and mid-career administrative personnel at colleges and universities for advancement into senior positions.

The Ed.D. is the highest practice-based degree in the field of educational leadership. At the doctoral level, students develop the additional skills necessary for effective senior leadership of supervisory unions and other more complex educational organizations.

In 2013 Castleton University saw the inauguration of the Castleton Plan, a strategic plan and blueprint developed collaboratively over the course of more than a year that envisioned the next ten years at Castleton. The plan builds on the reinvigoration of the past fourteen years, with well-planned incremental increases in undergraduate and graduate enrollment, staffing, programs and facilities.

The growth and cultivation of exemplary gradate degree programs, including online and hybrid programs and courses, have paved the way for the University’s first doctoral program and thereby aids in establishing Castleton as a leader in graduate education.

In addition to the new doctoral program, Castleton University also offers master of arts degrees in arts administration, school psychology, and theater; a master of arts degree in education with focuses in applied behavior analysis, curriculum & instruction, educational leadership, mathematics, or special education; a master of music education degree, and master of science degrees in accounting, and athletic leadership.

For those eligible for enrollment, the program is now accepting applications for the fall 2016 semester. For more information visit castleton.edu/gradprograms.
