Saturday, June 25 at 2 p.m. — PLYMOUTH NOTCH — The Coolidge White House animals will be the center of attention at the President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site on Saturday, June 25 at 2 p.m. Noted presidential scholar David Pietrusza presents “Wombats & Such,” a program about the Coolidge White House menagerie that included the usual dogs, cats, and birds, as well as exotic presidential gifts–lion cubs, wombats, and, of course, “Rebecca Raccoon.” Family pets played a major role in the private life and public image of the Coolidges.
David Pietrusza has written four studies of twentieth century presidential elections (1920, 1932, 1948, and 1960), as well as three books on Calvin Coolidge.The Wall Street Journal recently ranked Pietrusza’s “1920: The Year of the Six Presidents” as among its Five Best Books on Political Campaigns. He has appeared on C-SPAN Book-TV, ESPN, NPR, AMC, and The History Channel.
