RRMC’s Sonce Pearce, RN receives national DAISY award for extraordinary nurses

RUTLAND–Rutland Regional Medical Center’s Sonce Pearce, a registered nurse at the ENT & Audiology Clinic, was honored for excellent care by the DAISY Foundation. The DAISY award is a nationwide program that recognizes nursing excellence.

Pearce received a heartfelt nomination from a patient who went into sudden cardiac arrest following a routine hearing aid check. Pearce, who was nearby, immediately went to work providing CPR with assistance from ENT physician Jennifer Judkins, M.D. The patient’s wife wrote, “She [Pearce] responded instantly to the situation and did what she had to do with vigor and determination. Her prompt and efficient action saved my husband’s life.”

“We are so proud to have her on the team,” said Elizabeth Kyhill, senior director of clinical services. “Sonce’s quick thinking and actions represent the skill level and kind heart that she displays every day.”

The DAISY award ceremony, held before family and colleagues, honored Pearce with the “Extraordinary Nurse” certificate, which reads: “In deep appreciation of all you do, who you are, and the incredibly meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people.”

Additionally, Pearce received a DAISY award pin; a beautiful, hand-carved serpentine stone sculpture from Zimbabwe, entitled “A Healer’s Touch”; a large celebratory banner that will hang in her unit; and a spotlight page on the DAISY Foundation’s website.
