KMS cycling takes to the road and rolls onto the podium

KILLINGTON—The Killington Mountain School cycling team traveled to Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York for several races, taking podium positions in various categories. Coach Brad Ramsay checked in May 10 with an update and the following results.

Limerock

“On May 1, KMS Cyclists Noah Barrow, Josh Chu, Jack Lynch, and Johannes Stromski traveled to Lakeville, Conn., for the Limerock Grand Prix of Cycling. This race, run on a Formula One track, is well run, a lot of fun, and has been continuously becoming more popular. With an uphill following the first turn, then a fast descent into the S-turns before turning the final corner into the long finish stretch, the races are always fast and exciting. A headwind on the finish straight made it particularly difficult to establish a break on your own. The cold rain and wind made going it alone even less appealing!

“Thus, for the most part, the races for KMS athletes stayed together and came down to the finish sprints. In the Junior 14-18 Boys Category Johannes sprinted to third, with Jack close behind in fourth. In the Category 4/5 race, Johannes again took third in the field sprint, edging out Josh Chu who finished fourth, and closely followed by Jack Lynch. Moving up to the Category 3/4 field, Noah Barrow was boxed in for the sprint and finished 12th, with Josh Chu close behind in 18th (both finishing with the same time as the leaders). Last but not least, Ben Vergara finished his first-ever crit, mixing it up with the Category 4/5 Men. This was a valiant effort!”

Myles Standish Road Race and Woodstock Women’s Grand
Prix Results

“This past Saturday Noah Barrow, Vivien Rindisbacher, and Jack Lynch went down to the Myles Standish Road Race in Plymouth, Mass. The course consisted of a gently rolling five-mile loop with a fast downhill finish. After an early attack by Jack, Vivien got away with two others that countered Jack’s move. Despite Vivien sitting in and doing little work (knowing that he had two behind him in the peloton), the group remained off the front for the rest of the race.

“Back in the main peloton, Noah and Jack stayed near the front, jumping behind any who tried to bridge up to the lead group. None were able to bridge, and Vivien won the sprint among the lead group to take the top spot on the Podium! In the field sprint, Noah was attempting to lead out Jack, when Jack got pushed off of his wheel as the peloton swerved around a parked truck in the final meters. Realizing that he had lost Jack, Noah sprinted ahead of the pack and took fourth place, with Jack close behind in seventh. The three did a great job working as a team, and it was fun to watch!

“Also on Saturday, Turner Ramsay and Maddy Smith went down to race the Woodstock, N.Y. Women’s Cycling Grand Prix. They reported that the race was well-run and a lot of fun, with many of the region’s top women competing. Both Maddy and Turner finished in the top 20 in their respective fields, with Maddy 15th in the Category 4 women, and Turner 19th among the Category 3s.”

This past weekend, May 13-15, the squad headed to Hartford for a Friday night Kermis, then to Wilmington, Del., for the Wilmington Grand Prix (part of USA Cycling’s Pro Road Tour), and then moves onto Brooklyn for the Orchard Beach Crit on Sunday.
