Vermont and Upper Valley’s top young, classical musicians take to Chandler stage

Young musicians perform on stage as part of Chandler’s “The Next Generation” program, that showcases talented youth from Vermont and New Hampshire.

Friday, May 13 at 7:30 p.m. — RANDOLPH — On Friday evening, May 13, 31 young classical musicians from high schools and home schools in 14 towns throughout Vermont and the Upper Valley will showcase their performing artistry in Chandler’s eighth annual NPR “From the Top” look-alike program, “The Next Generation.” The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at Chandler Music Hall in Randolph. There will be a reception to greet the artists following the performance.

For this concert, the area’s top music teachers recommend students whose accomplishments deserve special recognition, and this performance will feature those students who were selected after a competitive audition. Several of this season’s youth have performed in past “The Next Generation” performances.

On the program will be opera arias, a flute quartet, an oboe quartet, a concerto for saxophone, a concerto for cello, works for solo piano and solo violin, and a composition for a small chamber ensemble, and one for strings and vocalists. The composers represent a range from the early 1700s to the 20th century and include Bach, Pergolesi, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Grieg, Kabalevsky, Saint-Saëns, Johann Struass II, Bartok, Debussy, Elgar, Glazunov,Vittorio Monti, Reynaldo Hahn, and French composer Rhené-Baton, a first in these concerts.

The performing artists will be pianists Stephen Wang, Jonathan and Joseph Goff, each of Hanover N.H.; Alexandria Leary, Windsor; Remi Savard, Montpelier;  and Henry Wu, Essex Junction; violinists Joseph Goff, David Horak, Norwich, and Nathan Wu, Essex Junction; cellist Justin Zhou, Hanover, N.H.;  saxophonist Jacob Kaplan, Randolph; vocalists Emily Ballou, South Royalton; Isabella Byrne, Chelsea; Sydney Johnstone, Plainfield N.H.; Alexander Marohnic, Cornwall; Laurel Mendelsohn, Hanover; and Hayley Mossell, West Lebanon. The Advanced Performance Ensemble from the Upper Valley Music Center which will perform two works is comprised of Alex and Zach Benton, Hannah Chipman, and Annica and Aislinn McDougall, all of Hanover; Zani Lewis, Burlington; and Charlotte Perkins, New London. The Mozart quartets will be performed by Ethan Adner, Hana Dai, Katherine Duan, Miriam Herron, Minnue and Hye Rine Uhm, and Sophie Underwood, all of Hanover; and Max Lutz, Perkinsville.

Tickets for this concert are available through the Chandler Music Hall box office at 802-728-6464 weekdays between 3 and 6 p.m. and online at www.chandler-arts.org. Advanced reserved seating tickets are $16 for adults and $10 for students.
