Rutland rugby triumphs despite tactical hiccups

By Maxx Steinmetz

Gawet Memorial Field in West Rutland was the venue this Saturday, April 23, where Rutland Rugby Football Club played host to Upper Valley Rugby Football Club.

Despite the newcomers to New England Rugby Football Union’s fourth division coming light on numbers, Upper Valley was able to score the first try of the match from a lapse of concentration from Rutland’s back line.

Rutland then tightened up its defense to match the quality of its offensive efforts that had yielded tries for the home team.

At the end of the 80 minute game, the score stood at 38-24 in favor of the visitors.

“It was about 50 percent of the time, but when you played the brand of rugby that we work on at practice, you looked really good,” said Nick McCardle, coach of the U-19 girls rugby team.

The Rutland Roosters will look to tighten up their practices to work on their weaknesses ahead of their game next weekend against Black River Rugby Football Club in Ludlow, Vt.
