Teal ribbons show support for Sexual Assault Awareness Month

RUTLAND—The Rutland County Women’s Network & Shelter announces a collaboration with several law enforcement agencies in Rutland County during Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Throughout April, the following agencies will display teal ribbons on their vehicles to highlight support for victims of sexual violence and encourage prevention efforts: Rutland County Sheriff’s Department, Rutland City Police Department, Brandon Police Department, Fair Haven Police Department, Rutland Town Police Department, Castleton Police Department, Pittsford Police Department and Killington Police Department.

Throughout the year, RCWNS works closely with local law enforcement. In 2015, RCWNS provided training in victim advocacy and resources to 135 officers. Additionally, an RCWNS Advocate is embedded within the Rutland City Police Department for one and a half days per week and advocates are available to all Rutland County law enforcement agencies on an as-needed basis. These efforts are part of a greater movement to strengthen the relationship between victims, officers, and advocates and break down barriers that prevent victims from seeking assistance.

Sexual assault is a widespread issue. RCWNS provides support to victims of sexual assault through emergency shelter, medical and legal advocacy, counseling and case management, and referrals to area resources. Additionally, RCWNS provides prevention efforts throughout Rutland County in an effort to prevent future incidents of sexual violence. For info, rcwn.org, or 802-775-6788.
