Killington may not have an organized youth wrestling program yet, but Killington does have fantastic youth wrestlers. Boys from Killington travel to Mill River to get the chance to experience the sport of wrestling.
This past weekend, K-6 grade youth wrestlers gathered at Fair Haven High School for the sixth annual Slater Slamboree. Teams from Mount Abraham, Middlebury, Otter Valley, Rockingham, Bennington, Randolph, Bur & Burton, Fair Haven (SWC), Vergennes and Springfield competed at this year’s event.
The Killington boys, coached by Mill River HS Coach Charlie Pritchard, placed well during this Saturday’s event.
Mac Abrams, a fourth grader at Killington Elementary School, finished second in his division. Kingston Cotter, a third grader at KES, wrestles at 64 pounds and went undefeated this weekend at Fair Haven.
When asked what Cotter likes most about wrestling, he replied: “I like to put my opponent in a cradle!”
“Wrestlers must have self-discipline, technique, endurance, patience, and take a loss as well as they take a win,” said Director of Killington Parks and Recreation Kim Peters. “The sport of wrestling teaches so many things; sportsmanship and perseverance are two of the best. Youth programs are so important for the growing of the varsity sport… As the director of Killington, it is important that we are offering sports that teach the kids many lessons. Look for youth wrestling next March in Killington.”
