Spring sports are getting into full swing for College of St. Joseph, after a week in which the baseball and softball teams played 11 games collectively. Fighting Saints baseball has really started rolling, going an impressive 6-1 on the week, including a couple of blowout victories. They are now 20-9 overall and a perfect 6-0 in YSCC conference match-ups.
Lady Saints softball also had a solid week of play, going 2-2 and losing by just one run in their losses. They are now 10-8 overall on the season and 7-1 for the YSCC conference. Here is a look at the games played over the past week.
March 23
Baseball played a doubleheader against Penn State Greater Allegheny on March 23 and delivered knockout punches to the Lions in both games. CSJ won each game by 12 runs, allowing just two runs on 16 hits by Greater Allegheny collectively. Connor Martin racked up four RBIs on three hits for the Fighting Saints in game one, while Nick Burch threw seven strikeouts for the win. Burch allowed one earned run on five hits and four walks over seven innings. Nestor Velazquez had two extra-base hits for the Saints in game two and Joey Williams was credited with the win. He allowed one run over seven innings. Williams struck out four, walked none and gave up 11 hits.
Softball faced Penn State Brandywine in a doubleheader and were able to split the two games. CSJ lost the first game in a tightly contested matchup that ended with Brandywine connecting on a walk-off hit to make the final score 2-1. The Lady Saints got even in the second game, claiming an 8-6 victory on what was a stellar performance by both teams.
March 24
Baseball split their doubleheader matchup with Point Park University on March 24. Their only loss the past week was in their first of two games against Point Park in a hard fought battle that ended 3-2. CSJ redeemed themselves in the second game, winning in another close fight that ended with a final score of 6-5.
March 25
The Lady Saints won one out of two games in their doubleheader matchup against Penn State Schuylkill on March 25. The first game was close all the way to the end, but Schuylkill was finally able to take a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the 6th inning, which ended up being the final score of the game. In game two, CSJ was firing on all cylinders and won convincingly 10-4. They were great from the plate, accumulating 14 hits.
Baseball played WVU Tech in a single game on March 25 and ended up winning the contest 12-9. The Saints out hit WVU Tech 20 to 10 and they were engaged from start to finish, making the big plays when they needed to.
March 26
Fighting Saints baseball finished off the week on a strong note, sweeping WVU Tech in a doubleheader matchup on March 26. They won the first game with relative ease, hitting the ball well and ending with a score of 10-4. In game two, the Saints had to fight and crawl to eventually come out on top of what ended up being a 5-4 victory for CSJ.
