Saturday, March 19 at 2 p.m. — RUTLAND — Live in HD from the National Theatre of Great Britain continues its five-play season on the big screen at the Paramount Theatre with “Les Liasons Dangereuses” on Saturday, March 19. All five plays are being presented as encore broadcasts (previously recorded), featuring some of the world’s most notable theatre institutions and artists. Broadcasts are on Saturdays at 2 p.m. and doors open for seating at 1:30 p.m. Tickets, $20, are general admission and are available in advance at the Box Office located at 30 Center Street in downtown Rutland, by phoning the venue Box Office at 802-75-0903, online at www.ParamountVT.org or at the door on the day of the screening.
“Les Liasons Dangereuses” is a Donmar Warehouse Production written by Christopher Hampton This National Theatre Live production was broadcast from the Donmar’s London home. Directed by Josie Rourke (“Coriolanus”), the cast includes Elaine Cassidy (“The Paradise”), Janet McTeer (“The Honourable Woman”) and Dominic West (“The Wire,” “The Affair”).
In 1782, Choderlos de Laclos’ novel of sex, intrigue and betrayal in pre-revolutionary France scandalized the world. Two hundred years later, Christopher Hampton’s irresistible adaptation swept the board, winning the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Play. Josie Rourke’s revival now marks the play’s 30 anniversary.
Former lovers, the Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont now compete in games of seduction night but Valmont has targeted the peerlessly virtuous and beautiful Madame de Tourvel. While these merciless aristocrats toy with others’ hearts and reputations, their own may prove more fragile than they supposed.
Two more screenings follow “Les Liasons Dangereuses” in the series of five: “The Hangmen” on April 2; and “The Hard Problem” on April 9.
