Killington Active Seniors walk over 3,000 miles through the Byways

KILLINGTON—The Killington Active Seniors group in Killington set a goal to complete the 723 miles of Byways in Vermont through exercise from January to March. The 10 Byways throughout the state range from 11 miles to 185 miles. In total, they make up 723 miles.

“As the Parks and Recreation Director for town of Killington, it is important to include all ages in our programs, and this challenge was a great way to have the Seniors stay active through the winter months and have fun doing it!” said Kim Peters, Parks and Rec Director.

The state Byway routes are particular scenic stretches of roads that take travelers through Vermont’s forests and farmland to centuries-old villages and towns that are vibrant hubs of culture, commerce and recreation. Not only was this a physical challenge, but the program also encouraged individuals to find out more about the Byways of Vermont.

Printed information on each Byway is available at the Sherburne Memorial Library, along with team and individual progress.

The program was open to anyone; however, the senior groups, including Killington Active Seniors and Bone Builders (which also meets at Sherburne Library) have been the most active. Weekly participants who have submitted their steps/miles are entered into a drawing to receive a prize.

As of March 3, 2016, the seniors have completed over 3,000 miles. They are on their fourth time through the Byways.

“Every week the participants are sending me their steps/exercise and they always beat the week before numbers. I am so impressed by their determination to complete this challenge,” Peters added.
