Saturday, Feb. 27 at 9 a.m. — WOODSTOCK — Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park is hosting a Winter Wilderness First Aid Workshop in partnership with SOLO (Stonehearth Open Learning Opportunities) on Saturday, Feb. 27. This training will focus on concerns for a winter wilderness setting. There will be a review on wilderness versus urban environments and how the changes between the two can lead to certain problems in a backcountry setting, along with discussion on some basic preventative measures of how one can be better prepared for the out-of-doors in a cold weather environment. There will also be information and practical components on basic patient assessment, shelter building, and cold related injuries. Through attending this workshop, SOLO’s hope is that participants will leave with a better understanding of the wilderness setting and how not being prepared can lead to an emergency situation. Workshop will be both inside and outdoors, please dress appropriately for all conditions. This is a non-certification training.
SOLO was founded in 1976 as a school dedicated to teaching wilderness and emergency medicine, best-known as the first organization to recognize the legitimacy of this type of training and make a commitment to being the only full-time training center of its kind in the world. Combining the theoretical with the experiential, SOLO wilderness and emergency medicine courses are designed to teach the skills and knowledge for a safe, successful rescue operation or casual outdoor venture, with an emphasis always on awareness, prevention, and the environment with lots of hands-on practice.
The workshop runs all day, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with an hour lunch. It is being held at the Forest Center at Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park, Woodstock.
